Dear Friends, Family and Neighbors,

I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Clayton School Board. I am the mother of four children, two boys at Wydown Middle School and two girls at Glenridge Elementary. A native of Colorado, I graduated from Washington University in 1998 with a B.A. in Psychology and have enjoyed making a home in St. Louis with my husband, Patrick Win, ever since. My passion for health, safety and social emotional wellness  led me to earn two Masters’ degrees concurrently, one in Public Health and the other in Social Work. Upon graduation, I worked as a mental health counselor and health educator at Wash U. In these roles I had the opportunity to provide the information and support students needed in order to make informed, healthy choices that allowed them to make the most of their college education.

As I watch my children grow, I’m continually amazed by how different they are, each with their own set of strengths, interests and challenges and these are reflected in the vast differences in their academic and social emotional needs. The Profile of a Graduate is the vision the district set forth last year which defines the characteristics that we have collectively set as those we most value and wish our graduates to exemplify; they are: self-actualization, intellectual curiosity, empathy, cultural competency, creative thinking, and collaboration. It strikes me that so many of these attributes are ones that are deeply connected to social emotional health; this isn’t the portrait of a student who is simply a “high achiever.” We’re interested in our students becoming people who will seek out fulfilling work, engage in their communities and care about something beyond themselves.

This extraordinary vision and my belief that I can help the district achieve these goals is what inspired me to run for the board. My education, training and determination to meet the unique academic and social emotional needs of every student will provide a distinctive voice to the board table. Additionally, I have twelve years of practical and hands on experiences volunteering within our schools, attending board meetings and collaborating with district administrators and local resources to support our students, teachers and parents.

If elected to the board, I will strive to give every student the opportunity to reach their academic potential and work to maintain our district’s high academic standards. To accomplish this, the district must provide an equitable education that honors students’ unique academic needs, embraces our culturally and racially diverse student body, provides customized learning opportunities and utilizes data-driven curriculum. Of course, providing our students with these resources requires careful fiscal stewardship, a responsibility I take seriously.

As a counselor, I understand the value of listening and asking the right questions. As a board member, my primary responsibility will be as a listener, advocate and collaborator. I look forward to the opportunity to learn from all members of our community— parents, students, teachers, staff, district residents and my fellow board members— to understand and work together to solve the issues that are most important to you.

I would love to hear from you. Please email or message me to set up a time to talk by phone or in person.

Warm regards,

Christine Win
